Patrick - Interesting photos! The Western Air Lines plane is a Convair 240 while the photos which show the registration N73017 on the wing are of a United Air Lines Convair 340. I would guess the United photos were of the Salt Lake to SFO leg of your Dad's trip. No doubt, the mechanics worked on the oil leak upon arrival in SFO!
